Abstract

Considers the potential legal avenues for a consensual UK withdrawal from the EU, and how the UK's subsequent relations with the EU as a "divorcee" might develop. Reflects on whether a unilateral withdrawal is possible or whether a specific withdrawal agreement is necessary, assesses the challenges posed by such an agreement, and outlines its likely contents and structure. Examines alternatives to EU membership, including participation in the European Economic Area (EEA), or a bilateral relationship such as that adopted by Switzerland.
