Abstract

Educators, as well as being experts in their field, are skilled at managing people and pedagogy. A facet of this skill is the ability to adapt to the uniqueness of each new teaching situation and enrich learning by identifying, and finding solutions to, pedagogic problems. In this presentation, I give four examples from my own teaching in linguistics. I look at: using the first fifteen minutes of the lecture more effectively; designing better student-centred in-class learning tasks; getting students to do their reading and read more critically; and making assessment more interesting, more public and more empowering.
