Abstract

Entrepreneurship has increasingly gained attention in Indonesia, as the private and governmental sectors persevere to support the entrepreneurial demands of young people. In the field of psychology, entrepreneurial business outcomes are seen through the facets of personality traits, attitude, entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial orientation (EO). Previous meta-analysis has shown EO as one of the strongest correlates of business outcomes. Our research focuses on entrepreneurial orientation at the individual level, namely Individual Entrepreneurial Orientation (IEO). Recent models define IEO as having three salient dimensions, consist of proactiveness, risk taking and innovativeness. However, Confirmatory Factor Analysis of an adapted IEO questionnaire in Bahasa Indonesia failed to fit the three-dimensions model of IEO. We argue that there could be culturally related factors in defining IEO, especially in young entrepreneurs, and that further research about process, practices and decision-making activities of young entrepreneurs is needed. This study aims to explore IEO using the Grounded Theory approach. Semi-structured Interview data from ten entrepreneurs in Jakarta and Bandung explores the merit of the three IEO dimensions and analyzes the emergence of other significant factors shared amongst Indonesian entrepreneurs. This paper presents the results of the study and maps them onto a competency-based framework for entrepreneurship.
