Abstract

This paper explores the recent history of universities and colleges of Higher Education (HE) in the UK. Major expansion in the numbers of students has inevitably led to problems in financing both for universities and for students. This in turn has led to a search for new sources of income and a drive to cut unit costs. Higher education is of growing importance to the national economy, both as a means of providing skilled labour and as an invisible export. Government has become increasingly involved in shaping both the profile of HE and the way in which it is managed.
