MESH is a visualisation project that traverses maps and reorganises as a spatialised 3D environment, the hard disk of the computer on which it runs. In doing so it employs a self-organising behaviour to acquire, shuffle and discard material discovered through its ruminating behaviour. Self-organisation is a general model, which describes the way in wich an organised whole with macroscopic features can arise from local microscopic processes. In MESH an evolving image network is generated that takes its form from the interaction between the internal organising algorithm of the software and the structure and content of the source data. In doing so the project draws on ideas from systems theory about the interface between different types of self-organising networks and the nature of the environment in wich they are situated.
