Abstract

Deposits explores different facets of a singular approach to the problematic of making art as a means to produce remembrance of the Holocaust. It develops a notion of history in the present rather than drawing on the past and thus addresses the site of memory strictly within the terms of its contemporary conditions and concerns. Central to the form and content of Deposits, as it is to a lot of Orlow's work, is the figure of the archive and the agency of the artist as archivist and mediator. Deposits brings together a body of video-work by Uriel Orlow. Its first configuration was exhibited at Brighton Media Centre Gallery in 2002 (curated by Time Projects). A subsequent configuration was shown in the group show Glad to be of service at ifa Galerie, Berlin from January to March 2005. This exhibition then traveled to Dokumenationszentrum Prora and Kunstverein Rosenheim in Germany. Individual components of the work have also been shown at Prog:Me Media Festival Rio de Janeiro July-August 2005, and in Ghosting at Arnolfini Bristol, June 2006. The work in Deposits has also engendered critical essays which have been collected in a monographic publication Deposits (Zurich/Berlin: Greenbox, 2006).
