A three-hour film version of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Hamlet, originally staged in 2008, with David Tennant as the Prince and Patrick Stewart as Claudius. The film is directed by Gregory Doran, with whom John Wyver collaborated on an earlier Shakepseare film of Macbeth in 2000. The production is shot entirely on location with a single RED digital camera, and in part explores how to translate a successful staging to the screen, both retaining a strong awareness of its original form and achieving a contemporary screen language for a modern audience. The film was screened in the United Kingdom on BBC Two on Boxing Day 2009 to an audience of 900,000, and has since been broadcast in the United States and Japan, as well as being released on Blu-ray and DVD and distributed online by streaming and download-to-own.
