The effects of base-flow augmentation upon cohesive boundary channels are assessed by the examination of the River Ter, Essex, U.K. Channel changes are identified from the comparison of field data for fifteen cross-sections surveyed before, nine and fifteen years after the completion of an off-line storage reservoir. A ten-fold increase of low-flow discharge below the reservoir appears to be responsible for a two-fold increase of channel capacity. Variations in the magnitude and direction of change observed between individual locations were directly related to the initial channel form.
