TitleDennis Severs' house: performance, psychogeography and the gothic
AuthorsMcEvoy, E.
Abstract

This article looks at Dennis Severs' House in Spitalfields. It considers the house as a piece of Gothic performance in relation to a tradition of performed Gothic architectures dating from the mid-eighteenth century. It discusses Severs' House as an unheimlich home and as a materialization of the Gothic house of fiction. In its closing section, it discusses the house in terms of wider cultural debate about history and heritage, looking at, in particular, its use in the rhetoric of Iain Sinclair and Patrick Wright. It concludes by discussing the relation of psychogeography to the Gothic.
