Abstract

Sports tourism has, in the past three decades, seen significant growth in attention from the academic community, with Weed (2009) identifying a number of markers that denote maturity as an academic field. It is important for many holiday destinations, accounting for up to one-quarter of tourism receipts (Tassiopoulos and Haydam, 2008) with sporting mega events attracting large numbers of tourists, bringing both spectators and participants to host destinations as well as influencing image and appeal for future visitation (Visit Scotland, 2012). The value and scale of the sports tourism industry is difficult to accurately predict due to the diversity of sports activities, events and attractions. However the focus on golf tourism in this chapter is justified because, with an estimated market worth in excess of $25 billion (Mintel, 2010) generated from the 80 million golfers worldwide, it is perhaps the largest sector of the sports tourism industry.
