Description

For some time Foster + Partners Architects have been working with the European Space Agency to develop 3D printable habitation concepts for deployment on the Moon. They have also been participating in an ongoing NASA-backed competition to propose habitation methods that could be used on Mars.

Working closely with Foster + Partners and the University of Westminster department of Computer Science and Engineering, Richard Difford and Miriam Dall’Igna from the department of Architecture led a team of students to develop an installation for FAB FEST’17 ( http://fabfest.london/mars-project/ ). The installation was designed to be fabricated entirely from cardboard and to provide an artificial environment within which prototype autonomous robots could be trained to navigate - simulating the path-finding required for robots to build the conditions for human habitation on Mars.
